Rajagiri College of Social Sciences (Autonomous), Kalamassery, established in 1955 by the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) Congregation, is one of India's premier institutions for higher education. Guided by its motto, Relentlessly Towards Excellence, the college has built a legacy of academic distinction, innovation, and social commitment. Conferred autonomous status by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2014, the institution continues to enjoy autonomous status up to the academic year 2029–30. Rajagiri College of Social Sciences was ranked 12th among colleges in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 and the 1st in Kerala under the Kerala Institutional Ranking Framework (KIRF) 2025. The institution is accredited with an A++ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a CGPA of 3.83. Rajagiri has also earned international recognition by being placed in the 601–800 global band for SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2026. Rajagiri was also granted the status of 'College with Potential for Excellence' (CPE) by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2016.

Recognitions

The institution has also received many national recognitions, including the India Elite Education & Institutional Excellence Award 2024, Eat Right Campus Award by FSSAI (2025–2027), Green Institution Certification from the Haritha Keralam Mission, and the Best NSS Unit Award (2023–24). With excellent infrastructure, multidisciplinary academic programmes, international collaborations, research centres, placement opportunities, live labs (extension departments), and a strong commitment to innovation, sustainability, and community engagement, Rajagiri continues to set benchmarks in higher education at the national and international levels.

Department of Social Work

he Department of Social Work at Rajagiri College of Social Sciences (Autonomous) has a strong record in social work education, research, internationalisation and community engagement. The Department has been ranked second among Social Work programmes in India by Outlook-ICARE (2024) and second by India Today (2020–2024). The Department has undertaken research with Vimukthi Mission, Department of Excise, Government of Kerala, Kerala Development and Innovation Strategic Council, National Human Rights Commission, Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights and Department of Social Justice. The Rajagiri Journal of Social Development is listed in UGC CARE and received the ICSSR Adhoc Annual Grant-in-Aid for 2024–2025. The Department has received appreciation for its contributions to the Tele-Counselling Programme, Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, Anti-Drug Awareness Campaign and Varnachirakukal Children’s Fest, and has been recognised for its work in palliative care and COVID-19 pandemic management.
The Department celebrated 25 years of internationalisation through DYUTI 2024 and hosted the 24th ICSD Biennial Conference, DYUTI 2025, marking 25 years of DYUTI. Three books were published during DYUTI 2025. The Department has also hosted the 10th International Summer University ( 2019), the Annual Symposium on Building Networks and Frameworks for Global Social Work (2018) and the NAPCAIM 2nd International Conference on Palliative Care (2023), and received the UGC-DAAD Project-based Personnel Exchange Programme (2018) and UGC-UKIERI Joint Research Programme (2017).
